    DIY Hot Cocoa Bombs

    Hot cocoa bombs

Hot Cocoa Bombs are super popular right now and that means they are VERY hard to find in stores. But, no worries because they are very easy to make! They are also a GREAT homemade gift. So, without further ado here is our DIY Hot Cocoa Bombs recipe.

    Ingredients

    Hot cocoa bomb ingredients

Note: In the picture above, I have a holiday themed non-stick mini cake pan. While this technically works for cocoa bombs, you will see some pictured with sprinkles around the edges because they are MUCH harder to get out of the pan. I prefer using the silicone round mold.

    Instructions

    Step One: Melt Chocolate

This really is a simple process. First, you need to melt your chocolate. For my round mold, I use roughly 1 1/2 rounded tablespoons of chocolate chips for each half circle. You will have to judge for yourself how much chocolate you will need depending on the size of your shape/mold.

I melt my chocolate in the microwave. You can use the double-boiler method, but for me it’s faster and easier to use a microwave. Put all of your chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and heat on high for 30 seconds. Then mix the chocolate and put back in the microwave at 15 second increments stirring between each one until the chocolate is melted. It is very important NOT to overheat your chocolate in the microwave. It will burn quickly if you are not paying attention!

Step Two: Add Chocolate to Mold

Next, put a spoonful of chocolate into each mold and spread up around all the sides. Make sure to get good coverage. When all sections are full, put the mold in the refrigerator for about one hour or until the chocolate has hardened.

    Step Three: Remove Hardened Chocolate

Once hardened, remove chocolate from the mold. With the silicone molds this is incredibly easy. You just gently push from the back and it peels right out. With the non-stick mini cake pan, I had to use the edge of a knife or offset spatula to pop the chocolate out of the mold. (This made the edges really uneven which is why I don’t recommend using the mini cake pan unless you have no other option, but I was able to make it work.)

Step Four: Fill with Cocoa Mix & Add-ins

Next, fill half of your chocolate shells with an appropriate amount of hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows or add-ins.

Step Five: Attach Top Shell & Enjoy

The last step is to attach the top shell. To do this, I heated water in a bowl in the microwave until hot. I poured the water out and turned the bowl upside down and used it to melt the edge of the empty shell. Once the edges were nice a melty, I just placed them on top of the filled shells and gently turned them to seal the bomb.

Finally, put them in the fridge one last time to set the chocolate seam and you’re done! Viola, you have DIY Hot Cocoa Bombs!

    DIY Hot Cocoa Bombs

There are so many fun ideas you could do with this. Add crushed candy canes, caramel candies or even a larger marshmallow in a fun shape if it fits! My kids go crazy for these and I have given them as gifts multiple times – they always impress. Most importantly, have fun!

  • “You’ve Been Booed” Thanksgiving Version

    “You’ve Been Booed” Thanksgiving Version

There’s nothing better than giving and letting someone know how much you appreciate them, especially when its spontaneous! So, this year I decided to start a new Thanksgiving Tradition. The idea is similar to Boo Baskets or “You’ve Been Booed”. You leave a bag of goodies on the front porch of a family in your neighborhood and then, hopefully, they do the same to another house and so on. I wanted to put a Thanksgiving twist on it, mainly to focus on the idea of giving and of gratitude. So, here is our “You’ve Been Booed” Thanksgiving Version.

    Create a “You’ve Been Thank’d” Basket

First, put a bag, bucket or basket together with some treats and attach a nice note explaining the recipient is being ‘Thank’d’. Then, include the “We’ve Been Thank’d” sign for them to put on their door. Finally, drop the basket on the front porch of a neighbor and make sure to tell them to pass their own ‘Thank’ on to another family.

    Item’s included in my basket:

  • Easy Cat Mini Cookie Cakes

    Easy Cat Mini Cookie Cakes

I’m going to admit something a little crazy about my daughter…she doesn’t like cake. I know, what kid doesn’t like cake? Don’t get me wrong, she’ll “suffer” through eating it at birthday parties and celebrations, but she definitely doesn’t prefer it. Last year for her birthday I made her a large Triple-Layer Cookie Cake with a chocolate whipped cream frosting which she absolutely loved. Well, now that she’s turning 9, she loves all things miniature. And cats. And tie-dye. So I decided to combine all three and make her these adorable Cat Mini Cookie Cakes!

The good news is they’re super easy to make and use easy to find ingredients. They were a big hit with family and friends and most importantly my daughter. She LOVED these mini cookie cakes and already asked for me to make them again for her next year. Read on for instructions and ingredient list.

    Easy Cat Mini Cookie Cakes

    Ingredients

-Cookies – you need 3 for each cake (One of the best things about these cookie cakes is how versatile they are. You can make them smaller, larger, two layer, etc. – choose any cookie size and flavor you want!)
-Frosting – simple buttercream or can of white frosting – I used this kind Buy at Target
    -Mini Marshmallows
    -Chocolate Chips
-Chocolate sprinkles – Buy on Amazon
-Pink round sprinkles – similar to these Buy on Amazon
    -Any fun shaped sprinkles

    Tools

-Cake Icing Tool, like this Wilton Dessert Decorator – Buy on Amazon
-Small Offset Spatula, we like this reasonably priced one from Ateco – Buy on Amazon

    Mini Cookie Cake Instructions

To make this year’s celebration easier, I decided to buy cookies instead of make them. My local grocery store has a bakery and I figured they would be more uniform in size than homemade cookies. I purchased three different flavors for a bit of added fun and because I made each mini cookie cake with three “layers”. I bought standard chocolate chip cookies, M&M candy cookies and chocolate chocolate chip cookies. You could make your own of course, it’s up to you!

Next up was frosting. I never use canned frosting, but due to time constraints and some home construction I decided to make my life easier. Canned frosting can be very oily which is one of the reasons I usually don’t use it. To make it more of a stiff piping consistency you can add powdered sugar and mix. I then divided it into different bowls and mixed in pink, blue, and yellow food coloring.

Once you have the frosting ready, assembling your mini cookies cakes is easy. All you need to do is pipe or spread some frosting on one cookie, place the second cookie on top. Then add another layer of frosting and finally the third cookie on top of that. You will have a stack of three cookies with a layer of frosting in between them.

    Decorating your Mini Cookie Cakes

Once all of your cookie cakes are assembled, it is time to decorate. To get the swirled color effect, I placed a blob of pink, a blob of blue and a blob of yellow frosting on the top cookie. Then, I used my offset spatula in a swirling motion to spread it around the cookie. Sometimes I only used two colors to get different shades and sometimes I swirled more than others just to get a variation in color. NOTE: the more you swirl, the more the colors will start to blend so try to only move your spatula once or twice if possible.

Next, I added the cat details. For the ears, I cut a mini marshmallow in half and pressed the tops together to make the point of the ears. I also used mini marshmallows for the white mouth parts by cutting them in half and keeping them more rounded. For the eyes, I placed two chocolate chips upside down in the frosting. For the nose I used a pink, flat sprinkle. And finally, for the whiskers I used two long chocolate sprinkles. Extra: For a girly touch, I added a flower sprinkle by an ear on each one.

And that’s it! Have fun assembling these adorable cats for a special cat lover you know. Then, wait for everyone to gush over how cute they are!

    Stitch Fix Review with Pictures

It’s time for another Stitch Fix review with pictures! Below is a quick rundown of what I received in my most recent box. Stitch Fix allows you to write a note to your stylist for each fix, these notes are extremely important in getting a successful fix. Unless you are very easy to please you should never leave them blank.

Welp, this time I threw my own advice out the window. I wanted to see what would happen if I didn’t include a note. There wasn’t anything in particular I was searching for this time around and this was my 12th fix so I figured they probably had a good idea of what I like at this point. So, I decided to roll the dice. Take a look below for what I received, what I decided to keep and my full October Stitch Fix Review.

    October Stitch Fix Review

My October Stitch Fix right out of the box! Don’t you love how nicely everything is folded and presented like a little present? You get a quick glance at what’s in store.

    Stitch Fix Review

    LIVERPOOL
Tinsley High Rise Skinny Jean $78.00
    – These skinny jeans were softer than I expected and fit like a glove. I don’t have any black jeans in my wardrobe, how did you know Stitch Fix? These are a keeper.

Liverpool Tinsley High Rise Skinny Jean

    MIX BY 41 HAWTHORN
    Kallon Brushed Knit Hoodie $38.00
    – I didn’t know what to expect when I saw this folded in my pile. Is it another turtleneck sweater? Nope, a super soft knit hoodie! My day to day wardrobe is extremely casual and this is a great layering piece, especially for winters in Maine. The extra details on the arms made this a keeper too.

    FORTUNE + IVY
    Christelle Button Down Blouse $42.00
    – My first impression on this top was “No!”. I would never have picked this in a clothing store but I have to say I really like the fit. The color is also good for my complexion and great for the Fall. It was a smidge too tight so I’ll need a larger size. Luckily, Stitch Fix makes it very easy to request a different sizes. I’m a little on the fence, but I did decide to keep this one so I could receive the extra 25% off.

    Cardigan and Earrings

    PINK CLOVER
Nouri Textured Two Pocket Cardigan $48.00
    – I’m a sucker for a nice long cozy cardigan. Winter is very long time here in Maine so I practically live in them. I feel in love with the structure of this one from Pink Clover. Are you sensing a theme? Yes, I kept this one as well.

Pink Clover Nouri Textured Two Pocket Cardigan

    MARLYN SCHIFF
    Delilah Round Crystal Earrings $28.00
    – This is the first piece of jewelry that I’ve received in a Stitch Fix. I’ve indicated in my settings that I prefer to received jewelry rarely. Jewelry isn’t something I often spend money one but I do really like these pair of earrings they sent. The quality is very nice, they feel very solid and are nicely made. This picture doesn’t capture it but they have a nice sparkle as well. A keeper!

  • DIY Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dog Costume

DIY Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dog Costume

Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s dissent collar is an instantly recognizable icon of women’s rights and the trailblazing woman who worked so hard to secure them. In honor of her legendary life, I wanted to create a DIY Dissent Collar for Halloween this year. Once the collar was crated I couldn’t resist fashioning a full costume for my sweet girl Wrigley. Read on below for my DIY Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dog Costume, no sewing involved!

Note: This tutorial will focus on the costume I made for my dog, but the collar turned out so nice my daughter wants to wear it! And you know what, it fits her too. If you want to dress up as the Notorious RBG this tutorial will also work for people.

    Craft Supplies

    Michael’s:
    – One 9 x 12 inch sheet of black felt for the collar
    – One 12 x 18 inch sheet for the cape.
    Amazon:
    – Self-Adhesive Rhinestone Stickers
    – Gold Cording
    – Black Pipe Cleaners

    RGB DIY Dissent Collar

Ruth Bader Ginsburg DIY Dissent Collar

I hand-drew a template on paper to trace for the main collar shape. It turned out so well that I created a graphic version of my template to share with you! See below. Save the image to your desktop and then print it for your own costume. You may need to resize before printing depending on the size of your dog!

    Dissent Collar Template

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dissent Collar Template

Once I cut the collar shape out of felt, I added adhesive rhinestones to each of the vertical sections. The rhinestones I used are similar to these: Self-Adhesive Rhinestone Sticker

I started at the bottom by adding one rhinestone to the lowest sections (the ones that stick out a little lower than the others). I then went up from there adding more stones in a straight line up to the neckline. After that, I added a horizontal row along the neckline. Reference the photo below for rhinestone placement, you will see that some are larger than others.

After the rhinestones were completed, I cut out two strips of felt for the necktie. These you will need to size to your dog. Finally, I used hot glue to secure the strips to the top of the collar. You can add Velcro or a snap on the ends for a smoother look.

As you can see my dog looks utterly thrilled to be trying on her new RBG collar 😂. She looks adorable, but something was missing so I decided to add gold cording between the rows of rhinestones.

    Ruth Bader Ginsburg Dog Costume

The cording I used was actually up-cycled from the handles of a gift bag. You can find similar cording here: Metallic Tinsel Cord Rope

I cut strips and hot glued them between the rows of rhinestones, around the edges and along the neckline. And voila, a totally beautiful collar worthy of an American icon. It’s a little fancy for a dog, but it can be used on humans too!

*Tip: If you have trouble with removing any hot glue from the black felt you can color it in with a black sharpie to make it less noticeable.

    DIY Halloween Dog Glasses

For the glasses, I made a simple pair from pipe cleaners. My dog did NOT like them, but was such a good sport wearing them for the pictures. You can use any glasses without lenses you may have as well.

    DIY Dog Robe

To make the robe I used the same technique as my Harry Potter Dog Costume Robe, just without the white shirt collar. See it here: DIY No-Sew Harry Potter Dog Costume! It is basically a rectangle of black felt wrapped around my dog and glued together at her chest area. This way it can just slip over her head and I don’t have to worry about it falling off and it doesn’t restrict her movement.

    RBG Dog Costume

Here is the completed look – don’t you love that smile? Happy Halloween!

Humblemaker Cold Brew Coffee Shots Review

Attention busy moms and dads, we have a new coffee solution for you! Humblemaker, an independent coffee company out of California, sent us some of their new cold brew coffee shots to test and we are big fans.

Note: Affiliate links below. If you click on and purchase any item from this list, we may receive a small commission at no cost to you. We thank you for supporting us and keeping our website running!

Humblemaker generously sent us a gorgeous highball glass and 3 packs of their new cold brew shots; one of each variety. Each package ($30) contains 8 shots which is just about the right number to get you through the week – one a day and one emergency shot for long work days.

Humblemaker Cold Brew Coffee Shots 8 packs

    About Humblemaker

“Humblemaker cold brews are made using only the highest quality, responsibly sourced, fresh roasted organic coffees. Their proprietary process is cold from start to finish – closely regulating brew temperature and brew time to ensure ideal extraction and flavor. Their premium ingredients and cut-no-corners-attitude delivers the finest quality finished product possible.” This is directly from their website because, hey, you can’t beat this description!

    Our Review

Each shot offers a little something extra like Vitamin C or Ginseng. We love the 115mg of coffee in each shot but also the extra wellness boost! They are perfect for coffee on the go or to keep at your desk for a mid-day boost. This summer we brought them camping, some folks drank their shots straight and other added theirs to some cool milk.

note: these shots do need to be kept refrigerated so they stayed in the cooler at camp

Humblemaker Cold Brew Coffee Shots with Highball Glass

Cold Brew Coffee Shots – 3 Options

    1) La Fonda – “An antioxidant rich, Mexican Coffee cold brew shot with pure cinnamon and cacao that harness all the immune boosting power of green tea: active polyphenols, Vitamin C and selenium”

Taste test: The cinnamon and cacao really make this shot fantastic, the flavor isn’t overpowering and the coffee is smooth. Who doesn’t need an extra immune boost these days? I’ve actually mixed this with the Boomtowne shot for the ultimate wellness shot.

Humblemaker Cold Brew Coffee Shot La Fonda

    2) Black Sea – “This cognitive health Turkish Coffee cold brew shot is brewed with real cardamom and clove packed with L-Theanine and Ginseng, both known to promote memory and reaction time.”

Taste test: This was my least favorite of the three, the coffee is still fine but I’m extremely opposed to cloves. The clove notes seemed very strong to me. If cardamom and clove peak your interest then you will enjoy this one, it is particularly good for the fall.

Humblemaker Cold Brew Coffee Shot Black Sea

    3) Boomtowne – “An ultra smooth Simply Black triple strength cold brew shot with liquid multivitamin.”

Taste test: Yes, this is the winner for me! A wicked smooth no-frills black coffee shot with a multivitamin to boot.

Humblemaker Cold Brew Coffee Shot Boomtowne

    Conclusion

There are so many pros – flavor, taste and convenience. The wellness aspect of these shots is an absolute stand out. The La Fonda with extra immunity boost offers the ultimate combo. While these shots won’t replace my regular coffee everyday they will become a regular purchase. Having some on hand for those extra busy days has been a lifesaver.

The only con for me is the price. $30 for an 8-pack of shots seems a little steep, that is $3.75 each. This is similar to a Starbucks Coffee, but much more than brewed coffee at home. The good news is you are getting a multivitamin or an immunity boost in addition to your caffeine fix. You also won’t be tempted to get that pastry as you order your mid-day coffee. 😉

If you are unsure of what shot would work best for you, Humblemaker offers a sample pack with all 3 varieties. Once you find your favorite you can sign-up for their subscription service. Right now you can save 15% with subscription & save by using our affiliate link HERE. (only $3.19 per shot)

Humblemaker also offers whole bean coffee (or ground) starting at $18 for 12oz along with great swag like their highball glass and coffee tumblers.
